Sancho's Turn-Ons - Crazy Town - V. 1.0
Nov. 25, 2000
by SANCHOWILL

Welcome one and all to the resurrection. The prophecies have been fulfilled. Sancho has returned to inherit the underground. I’m sure that many of you reading this are unfamiliar with my work, for those of you that are familiar with it…rush it to the next paragraph. OK, the low down in Five words. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!!! I will hook ya up with the freshest, tightest, and most talented musical artists and bands immerging on the rock scene (term used loosely). Get the music before the radio does, or at least before the radio absolutely crams it down your throat to the point that you’re sick of it. For my re-introductory column here, you will notice the sub-titles above each paragraph. This is a “one time” thing just to show you the basic format of my column. Anyway, read on to get the complete concept.
My Artist/Band Discovery
First off, I wish I could apologize for not turning you on since the conception of this website, but frankly there hasn’t been shit worthy of a “turn-on” in a long, long time. I’ve been hard pressed to turn you on to “A Perfect Circle”. Definitely a noteworthy band, but I just don’t see them getting much bigger than they already are. However, I did recently see an interview with their drummer, I forget his name but do your homework and you can figure it out. Anyway, he’s played for numerous bands. Some more notable ones are “The Vandals” and “Devo” among many, many others. I was quite impressed. Anyway, I’m not turning you on to them. Nope, not this time. This time your “turn-on” is “Crazytown”. Anyone who lives here in the L.A. basin and listens to 106.7 KROQ has probably heard their single “Butterfly”. I haven’t really listened to KROQ in the past couple weeks but last time I checked in, that song was on the “Let’s play the fuck out of this song and make everyone come to hate it” play-list. Luckily for me (and you), before I could become deterred by heavy rotation, I caught on to this bands groove immediately. I had a feeling that there was something special about this band straight up, so I went directly to Napsterland and downloaded a couple more of their songs. You know, songs the radio will NEVER play. (sidenote: you will come to learn that I’m not too fond of the way most radio stations conduct themselves by abusing and/or misusing their power. And that goes for MTV too.) Anyway, I gave the freshly downloaded songs a listen. Afterward, all I could say is “gimme more” . So I took full advantage of Napsterville (while it’s still free) and got the rest of their debut CD, “The Gift Of Game”, downloaded onto my hardrive. Now I’m proving to myself that I’m a total freakin’ hypocrite (but on a higher level) because Crazytown is now in heavy rotation at my house. I’m cramming them down my own throat. But hey, at least I put the entire CD in heavy rotation, and for good reason, they fuckin jam. Damn, ok…… I’ve been going on about my personal discovery experience and I haven’t even given any thought to tell you what their style is like.

Get To Know The Band
As you already know, the band is named “Crazytown”. This 7 piece band call the mean streets of metropolitan Los Angeles home. I’m guessing that’s somewhere on the west side of L.A.. They don’t look like they’re from South Central or East L.A.. Anyway, They have a very interesting, intense, and catchy style. The vocals, for the most part, can be dubbed as rap. (personal thought: I’ve come to the conclusion that the degree of what you might personally call “rap”, has a direct correlation to how “white” you are. Don’t be offended by that, it’s merely a white boyz observation of other white boyz. Equally, age has a lot to do with this notion.) As I was saying, the “rappy” lyrics sing mostly about partying and “da bitches” and are heavily responsible for setting the ”get down and party hardy” tone of this disc. The lyrics are honestly good and really catchy. They lay perfectly over the hard and heavy edged guitars, interesting sounds, scratching, and hip-hoppish, at times almost funkadelic, rhythms and melodies. The musical arrangements help to separate this band from all others and shine bright. The instrumental side of their music could stand on its own. It’s that good, so good that you’ll find yourself bobbing your head along with the music. (and hopefully your girlfriend’s too) In my opinion, and this whole column is my opinion, it’s a must have for the upcoming winter house parties and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit to see it carry on even stronger into the spring and summer of 2001as their fan base grows and they creep into superstar status. I’m predicting that as the weather starts warming up again, you will hear Crazytown blaring out of peoples cars driving down the street.
